33 Beekman Street is a Privately Owned Public Space in the Financial District near the Civic Center, providing an indoor publicly accessible lobby near some of the oldest streets in Manhattan.
Beekman Street is named for the Beekman family, prominent Dutch colonial landowners whose estate covered much of what is now the eastern Financial District. The street runs from the Civic Center area to the South Street Seaport.
The nearby Beekman Tower at 8 Spruce Street, designed by Frank Gehry and completed in 2011, is one of the most architecturally significant residential towers in New York, with an undulating stainless steel facade that has made it a landmark of contemporary architecture.
The Civic Center area, where City Hall, the courthouses, and other government buildings are concentrated, is immediately to the west. The POPS serves both the government workers and the growing residential population of this section of Lower Manhattan.
This lobby space provides public access on a street named for one of colonial New York's founding families, in a neighborhood where four centuries of history are compressed into a few dense city blocks.
