Duane Park

Duane Park is a small triangular park in Tribeca on Duane Street between Hudson and Greenwich Streets, established as public open space in 1797 when the city purchased the land for five dollars. This makes it one of the first parcels specifically purchased by the City of New York for use as a public park.

The park is named for James Duane, the first post-Revolutionary War Mayor of New York City, who served from 1784 to 1789. Duane, a lawyer and patriot, played a key role in the transition from British colonial rule to American self-governance and oversaw the city's recovery from the devastation of the Revolutionary War.

For much of its history, Duane Park sat at the center of the Washington Market district, the city's primary wholesale produce market. Butter, eggs, and cheese merchants surrounded the park, and early morning deliveries filled the streets with the bustle of the food trade. The market relocated to the Bronx in the 1960s, and the area gradually transformed into the residential Tribeca neighborhood.

Today the park features a wrought-iron fence, mature London plane trees, benches, and ornamental plantings that create a genteel atmosphere amid the converted loft buildings of Tribeca. The park was restored in the late 1990s with period-appropriate landscaping that evokes its 19th-century character.

Duane Park's survival through two centuries of Manhattan development is itself remarkable. While countless other small parks and open spaces were swallowed by construction, this tiny triangle has endured, providing a continuous thread of public green space that connects modern Tribeca to the earliest days of the American republic.
