Greeley Square

Greeley Square is a small triangular park at the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue, and West 32nd Street, directly across from its larger counterpart Herald Square. The square is named for Horace Greeley, the founder and editor of the New York Tribune, one of the most influential newspapers in 19th-century America.

Greeley is remembered for his advocacy of westward expansion (the phrase 'Go West, young man' is attributed to him, though he may have been quoting another writer), his opposition to slavery, and his unsuccessful 1872 presidential campaign against Ulysses S. Grant. A bronze statue of Greeley seated in a chair occupies the square.

The square is managed by the 34th Street Partnership, the business improvement district that also oversees Herald Square. Under their care, the space has been transformed from a neglected traffic island into a well-maintained pocket park with seasonal plantings, movable tables and chairs, and food vendors.

Greeley Square sits at the heart of one of Manhattan's busiest commercial districts, steps from Macy's Herald Square and Penn Station. The square's seating areas provide a rare opportunity to sit outdoors in a part of Midtown where pedestrian congestion can be overwhelming.

Together with Herald Square across the street, Greeley Square forms a paired set of triangular parks created by Broadway's diagonal intersection with the grid, a common Manhattan typology that has generated dozens of similar small public spaces across the island.
