New York City AIDS Memorial

The New York City AIDS Memorial is a public memorial and park at the intersection of West 12th Street and Greenwich Avenue in the West Village, occupying the former site of the St. Vincent's Hospital Triangle. The memorial honors the more than 100,000 New Yorkers who have died of AIDS-related illness since the epidemic began in the early 1980s.

St. Vincent's Hospital, which stood adjacent to this site until its closure in 2010, was at the epicenter of the AIDS crisis in New York. The hospital's physicians and nurses were among the first to diagnose and treat the mysterious disease that was initially devastating the gay community of the West Village and Greenwich Village.

The memorial, designed by studio a+i and opened in 2016, features an 18-foot steel canopy with a triangular lattice pattern inspired by Walt Whitman's poem 'Song of Myself.' The canopy shelters a granite plaza inscribed with lines from the poem, and the park includes plantings and seating that invite contemplation.

The West Village was ground zero for the AIDS epidemic in New York, and the surrounding streets carry deep memories of loss for the community. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the neighborhood's residents watched friends, partners, and neighbors die in devastating numbers while government response was painfully slow.

The AIDS Memorial serves as a place of remembrance and resilience, honoring both those who were lost and the activists, caregivers, and scientists who fought the epidemic. Its location in the heart of the community most affected by AIDS ensures that the memorial is not an abstract monument but a living part of the neighborhood's daily life.
