The Battery

The Battery (formerly Battery Park) is a 22.9-acre public park at the southern tip of Manhattan, one of the oldest public open spaces in New York City. Its name derives from the battery of artillery positioned here in the 17th century to protect the harbor of the young Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.

The park's history stretches back to the very founding of New York. The Dongan Charter of 1686 placed the site under public jurisdiction, making it one of the city's first official parks. Over the centuries it has served as a military fortification, a promenade for 19th-century society, a gateway for millions of immigrants, and today, a beautifully restored urban park.

Castle Clinton, a circular sandstone fort built in 1811, sits within the park and is now a National Monument. The fort later served as an entertainment venue (Castle Garden), the country's first immigrant processing center (predating Ellis Island), the New York Aquarium, and now a visitor center and ticket office for ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The Battery Conservancy has led a comprehensive restoration since the late 1990s, including the SeaGlass Carousel (a stunning aquatic-themed carousel in a nautilus-shaped pavilion), restored native-species gardens, public art installations, and landscaped promenades with harbor views.

Multiple memorials honor Korean War veterans, the Merchant Marines, the U.S. Coast Guard, immigrants who passed through Castle Garden, and American servicemembers who died in Atlantic waters during World War II. The East Coast Memorial, with its massive bronze eagle, is among the most moving.

Today The Battery serves as both a neighborhood park for the growing residential population of Lower Manhattan and a major tourist destination welcoming millions of visitors annually. Its combination of deep history, spectacular harbor views, and contemporary design makes it one of New York's most significant public spaces.
