Tappen Park

Tappen Park is a 1.78-acre park at Bay Street and Canal Street in Stapleton, serving as the traditional village green for one of Staten Island's oldest North Shore communities. Named for a local family, the park has been the civic center of Stapleton since the 19th century.

Stapleton was one of the earliest developed communities on Staten Island, growing up around a waterfront landing that connected the island to Manhattan by ferry. The neighborhood's commercial district along Bay Street retains elements of its 19th-century character.

The park features a bandshell, mature trees, benches, and a playground. The bandshell hosts summer concerts and community events that draw residents from across the North Shore, continuing the park's historic role as a gathering place for the Stapleton community.

The Stapleton area has been the focus of waterfront redevelopment planning, including the Stapleton Waterfront project that aims to create new housing, commercial space, and public parkland along the shore. Tappen Park would serve as a green anchor connecting the existing neighborhood to the new waterfront development.
