Pelham Parkway

Pelham Parkway is a landscaped boulevard and linear park stretching from Bronx Park east to Pelham Bay Park, passing through the Bronx Park East and Morris Park neighborhoods. Designed in the 1880s, the parkway creates a grand tree-lined corridor connecting two of the Bronx's largest parks.

The parkway was conceived as part of the original Bronx park system, which envisioned grand landscaped boulevards linking the borough's major parks into a unified green network. Like its companion Mosholu Parkway to the west, Pelham Parkway features planted medians, pedestrian paths, and bicycle routes.

The neighborhoods along Pelham Parkway include some of the most diverse communities in the Bronx, with large Albanian, Italian, West Indian, and South Asian populations. The parkway's benches and shaded paths serve as informal gathering places for residents of the surrounding apartment buildings.

The parkway's role as a connector between Bronx Park (home of the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden) and Pelham Bay Park (the largest park in the city) makes it one of the most significant green corridors in New York's park system, linking over 3,700 acres of parkland.

Pelham Parkway embodies the 19th-century vision of the connected urban park system: a designed landscape that is both a park in its own right and a corridor linking greater parks, creating a green network that serves the entire borough.
