Woodlawn Cemetery is a 400-acre National Historic Landmark in the northern Bronx, one of the largest and most significant cemeteries in the United States. Like Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, Woodlawn functions as both an active burial ground and a magnificent park-like landscape.
The cemetery contains the graves of numerous notable Americans including Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz, Irving Berlin, Fiorello La Guardia, Joseph Pulitzer, Herman Melville, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Bat Masterson.
Woodlawn's collection of mausoleums and funerary art is one of the finest in the world, with works by architects and sculptors including John Russell Pope, McKim Mead and White, and Daniel Chester French. Many of the monuments are architectural masterpieces.
The cemetery's 400 acres of rolling hills, mature trees, lakes, and landscaped grounds provide one of the most extensive green spaces in the Bronx. The landscape was designed in the rural cemetery tradition, intended as a place for both burial and public enjoyment.
Woodlawn Cemetery offers tours of its notable graves, architectural monuments, and natural landscape, and hosts cultural events including jazz concerts honoring the many legendary musicians buried here.
