246 Spring Street is a Privately Owned Public Space in the SoHo / Hudson Square area, providing outdoor seating at a building near the western edge of one of Manhattan's most architecturally distinguished neighborhoods.

SoHo (South of Houston Street) is famous for its cast-iron architecture, with entire blocks of ornate 19th-century commercial buildings whose elaborate facades were mass-produced using cast-iron technology. The SoHo Cast-Iron Historic District preserves the largest collection of cast-iron buildings in the world.

SoHo transformed from a manufacturing district (its lofts were illegal live-work spaces for artists in the 1960s and 1970s) into one of the most expensive shopping and residential neighborhoods in Manhattan. The transformation is one of the defining gentrification stories of American urbanism.
