Dias y Flores Community Garden

Dias y Flores Community Garden is a tiny but vibrant community garden on East 3rd Street between Avenues B and C in the East Village. The garden's name, which translates from Spanish as 'Days and Flowers,' reflects the multicultural character of the Lower East Side neighborhood it serves.

The garden was established in the late 1970s or early 1980s during the wave of community greening that transformed vacant lots across the Lower East Side into gardens, gathering spaces, and green sanctuaries. At that time, the neighborhood was struggling with disinvestment, abandonment, and the ravages of the crack epidemic, and gardens like Dias y Flores represented acts of hope and community building.

Volunteer gardeners tend flower beds, vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plantings within the garden's compact footprint. Despite being barely one-twentieth of an acre, the space packs a remarkable density of plant life into its small plot, creating a lush green enclosure that feels worlds away from the surrounding streets.

The garden is part of a network of community gardens in the East Village and Lower East Side that collectively provide green space, growing opportunities, and social gathering places in one of Manhattan's most densely built neighborhoods. Many of these gardens have organized into advocacy coalitions to protect their land from development.
