Jane Street Garden

Jane Street Garden is a diminutive community garden tucked along Jane Street between Hudson and Greenwich Streets in the West Village. At barely more than a twentieth of an acre, it is one of the smallest maintained green spaces in Manhattan, yet its impact on the surrounding block is disproportionately large.

The garden was established by neighborhood residents on a vacant lot, part of the community gardening movement that flourished across Manhattan in the 1970s and 1980s. In the West Village, where private gardens behind townhouses have always been a coveted amenity, the creation of a shared community garden extended that tradition to residents who lacked their own outdoor space.

Volunteer gardeners maintain ornamental plantings, flowering shrubs, and small trees within the garden's compact footprint. The space is enclosed by fencing and accessible during daylight hours, providing a secluded green nook amid the busy streets of the West Village.

Jane Street itself is one of the most charming residential streets in the Village, lined with early 19th-century brick townhouses and mature trees. The garden contributes to the block's character, adding a pocket of cultivated green that complements the private gardens visible behind nearby houses.

Jane Street Garden is a reminder that community gardens are not only found in the historically underserved neighborhoods of the Lower East Side and East Village. In the West Village, where land values are among the highest in the world, the preservation of a tiny community garden represents a conscious choice to value shared green space over private development.
