The Marriott Marquis at 1535 Broadway is a Privately Owned Public Space within the massive Times Square hotel, one of the largest hotels in Manhattan with over 1,900 rooms. The POPS includes the hotel's soaring multi-story atrium and publicly accessible lobby spaces.
The Marriott Marquis was designed by architect John Portman, known for his dramatic hotel atrium designs. The building's interior features a towering central atrium with glass elevators that rise through the full height of the building, creating a spectacular vertical public space.
The hotel occupies one of the most prominent sites in Times Square, with its entrance on Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets. The building replaced several historic theaters when it was constructed in 1985, a loss that helped strengthen the city's theater preservation policies.
The Marquis Theatre, a Broadway house built within the hotel, continues the theatrical tradition of the site. The hotel's revolving rooftop restaurant (now closed) was once one of the signature dining experiences in Times Square.
