McKenna Square Park

McKenna Square Park is a small triangular park at the intersection of Broadway and West 206th Street in the Inwood neighborhood of northern Manhattan. The square is named for a local figure honored for service to the community, following the New York City tradition of naming small triangular parks for neighborhood heroes.

The triangle is created by the intersection of Broadway with the street grid in upper Manhattan, where Broadway follows its ancient diagonal path northward toward the tip of the island. These intersections produce the characteristic triangular remnants that dot Broadway's route from Lower Manhattan to Inwood.

McKenna Square features modest plantings, a small paved area, and limited seating. Its primary function is as a traffic island and neighborhood landmark rather than as a recreation space, though its plantings add welcome greenery to the busy Broadway commercial corridor.

The Inwood neighborhood surrounding the square is home to a predominantly Dominican-American community, with a vibrant commercial strip along Broadway featuring restaurants, bakeries, and shops that reflect the neighborhood's Caribbean cultural identity. The square sits within this lively streetscape.

McKenna Square Park is representative of the dozens of tiny named triangles and squares scattered along Broadway's path through Manhattan. Individually they are minor, but collectively they form a chain of small green spaces that humanize one of the world's most famous streets.
