Poppenhusen Park

Poppenhusen Park is a small park at College Point Boulevard and 14th Avenue in the College Point section of northern Queens. The park is named for Conrad Poppenhusen, a German-born industrialist who founded the village of College Point in the 1850s and was one of the most significant philanthropists in the history of Queens.

Poppenhusen established a hard rubber manufacturing company in College Point that became one of the largest employers in the area. He used his wealth to build the community's first free kindergarten, a free public library, and other civic institutions that earned him the title 'the Benefactor of College Point.'

The Poppenhusen Institute, founded by Conrad Poppenhusen in 1868, is the oldest active civic organization in the city and continues to serve the College Point community with educational and cultural programming from its landmark building near the park.

The park features a small green space, a monument to Poppenhusen, and benches. Its primary function is commemorative rather than recreational, honoring the industrialist whose vision and generosity shaped the community of College Point.

Poppenhusen Park preserves the memory of a 19th-century philanthropist whose investment in community institutions created a legacy of civic engagement that endures in College Point over 150 years after his founding of the neighborhood.
