Socrates Sculpture Park

Socrates Sculpture Park is a 6.28-acre outdoor sculpture park and exhibition space on the East River waterfront at Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City/Astoria. Founded in 1986 by sculptor Mark di Suvero and a coalition of artists, the park was created by transforming an illegal dumpsite and abandoned landfill into a vibrant outdoor gallery.

The park's founding represented one of the most significant artist-led community reclamation projects in New York City history. Di Suvero and fellow artists physically cleared the site of debris, rubble, and garbage, creating the open-air exhibition space that has since hosted works by thousands of emerging and established artists.

Socrates Sculpture Park presents free outdoor exhibitions of large-scale sculpture and multimedia installations year-round, with new exhibitions mounted annually through an open call process. The park also hosts films, performances, educational workshops, and community events, making it one of the most accessible and democratic art venues in the city.

The park's East River setting provides a dramatic backdrop for the artwork, with the Manhattan skyline visible across the water. The combination of monumental sculpture, industrial waterfront, and urban panorama creates an exhibition environment unlike any conventional gallery or museum.
