Sunnyside Gardens Park

Sunnyside Gardens Park is a 4.5-acre private park in the Sunnyside section of Queens, at the center of Sunnyside Gardens, a planned residential community built in the 1920s as one of America's first urban garden-city developments. The park is owned collectively by the surrounding homeowners and accessible primarily to residents and members.

Sunnyside Gardens was developed between 1924 and 1928 by the City Housing Corporation, inspired by the Garden City movement that sought to combine the amenities of suburban living with the convenience of urban density. The development featured shared inner-block gardens, moderate pricing, and a cooperative ownership structure.

The park's private status makes it unusual among New York City's green spaces, though the shared ownership model reflects the planned community's original vision of collective stewardship. The park hosts community events, sports programs, and seasonal celebrations for residents and members.

Sunnyside Gardens was home to numerous notable residents over the decades, and the neighborhood maintains a strong sense of community identity rooted in the idealism of its garden-city origins. The planned development was designated a New York City historic district in 2007.
