Orchard Beach

Orchard Beach is a 115-acre public beach and recreation area within Pelham Bay Park, built on an artificial crescent-shaped shoreline along Long Island Sound in the northeastern Bronx. Known as the 'Riviera of New York,' the beach was designed by Robert Moses and completed in 1936 using WPA labor.

Moses created the beach by connecting two small islands (Rodman's Neck and Hunter's Island) to the mainland using landfill and then constructing a 1.1-mile-long crescent of sand along the Sound. The project included a massive Art Deco bathhouse, a parking area for thousands of cars, and a boardwalk promenade.

The bathhouse complex, designed in the streamlined Art Deco style characteristic of Moses-era public facilities, features a central pavilion flanked by two wings and remains one of the most architecturally significant beach structures in New York City.

Orchard Beach has long served as the primary beach destination for Bronx residents and has become particularly important for the borough's large Latino community. The beach's summer atmosphere features merengue, salsa, and bachata music, food vendors selling Caribbean and Latin American cuisine, and a festive social scene that gives Orchard Beach its distinctive cultural character.

Orchard Beach demonstrates Moses' ability to create public facilities of grand scale and ambition, transforming a rocky shoreline into a sweeping public beach that serves hundreds of thousands of Bronx residents each summer with free ocean access and a beach experience that rivals any in the metropolitan area.
