Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along the East River in Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO, from Atlantic Avenue to Jay Street. Opened in stages beginning in 2010, the park has transformed a derelict stretch of shipping piers and warehouses into one of the most acclaimed urban waterfront parks in the world.

The park's creation was one of the most complex and contentious park-building projects in New York City history, requiring decades of community advocacy, environmental remediation, and negotiation over funding, governance, and design. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation manages the park through a self-sustaining revenue model that includes housing and commercial development on park-adjacent parcels.

The park encompasses multiple distinct sections built on renovated piers: Pier 1 features a great lawn, waterfront promenade, and granite overlooks; Pier 2 offers basketball, handball, shuffleboard, and bocce courts; Pier 3 provides a greenway connector and event space; Pier 4 includes a beach and tidal marsh; Pier 5 contains sports fields and a picnic peninsula; and Pier 6 features playgrounds, a dog run, and a ferry landing.

The landscape design, led by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, incorporates post-industrial materials from the existing piers, native plantings, and innovative topography that creates varied microclimates and habitats. The park's engineered habitats support marine life beneath the piers and attract migratory birds and pollinators above ground.

The park offers some of the most spectacular views in New York City: the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge framing the Lower Manhattan skyline, with the Statue of Liberty visible in the harbor to the south. Jane's Carousel, a restored 1922 carousel housed in a glass pavilion designed by Jean Nouvel, has become one of the park's most iconic attractions.

Brooklyn Bridge Park has catalyzed enormous economic development in Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO, contributing to rising property values and commercial activity. The park demonstrates that world-class waterfront design can coexist with a self-sustaining financial model, creating a new paradigm for urban park development that cities around the world have sought to replicate.
