Kaiser Park

Kaiser Park is a 26.26-acre park in the Coney Island neighborhood of southern Brooklyn, situated along Neptune Avenue and Bayview Avenue near the Coney Island Creek. The park serves the residential community behind Coney Island's famous boardwalk and amusement area.

The park is officially named Leon S. Kaiser Park, after Dr. Leon S. Kaiser (1884-1951), a New York City educator and principal of the adjacent Mark Twain Junior High School, for whom the park was renamed in 1951. Its location near Coney Island Creek places it along a tidal waterway that once separated Coney Island from the mainland of Brooklyn, when the area was truly an island accessible only by bridge or boat.

Kaiser Park features basketball courts, tennis courts, a playground, and open green areas. The park also includes a small beach along Coney Island Creek, providing sheltered waterfront access away from the ocean surf of the main Coney Island beach.

The residential neighborhoods of Coney Island, including the large public housing developments that house many of the area's year-round residents, rely heavily on public parks for outdoor recreation. Kaiser Park provides a quieter alternative to the busy boardwalk area, serving the daily needs of local families rather than summer tourists.

Kaiser Park represents the residential side of Coney Island: the community of families, schools, and neighborhood institutions that exists year-round behind the seasonal spectacle of the amusement parks and beach. For these residents, Kaiser Park is not an attraction but a daily amenity.
