Bellevue South Park

Bellevue South Park occupies about 1.6 acres in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, situated between East 26th and East 28th Streets near First and Second Avenues. The park takes its name from its proximity to Bellevue Hospital Center, the oldest public hospital in the United States.

Bellevue Hospital has occupied its site on the East River since 1736, making it a continuous presence in this part of Manhattan for nearly three centuries. The park provides green space for both hospital visitors and staff as well as residents of the surrounding neighborhood.

The park features mature trees, landscaped areas, benches, and open lawn spaces. A playground within the park serves neighborhood families, and the tree canopy provides welcome shade during summer months in a part of Manhattan where large parks are relatively scarce.

Kips Bay has evolved from a largely institutional area (anchored by Bellevue and the NYU Medical Center complex) into an increasingly residential neighborhood, making parks like Bellevue South more important as gathering spaces for a growing population.

The park benefits from its adjacency to the broader medical campus, which has invested in streetscape improvements that enhance the pedestrian experience. Together, the park and its surroundings create a more humane environment in what might otherwise be an imposing institutional district.
