J. Hood Wright Park

J. Hood Wright Park is a 6.7-acre park in Washington Heights at Fort Washington Avenue and Haven Avenue near West 173rd Street. The park is named for J. Hood Wright, a 19th-century banker and philanthropist who lived in the Washington Heights area and contributed significantly to the development of the neighborhood.

Wright was a partner in the banking firm of Drexel, Morgan and Company (a predecessor of J.P. Morgan) and used his wealth to support local institutions, including the J. Hood Wright Memorial Hospital, which served the Washington Heights community for decades before closing.

The park occupies a hillside site with significant elevation changes, characteristic of the rocky terrain of Washington Heights. This topography creates distinct levels within the park, with a playground and recreation areas on the lower sections and more passive green space on the upper slopes.
