St. Vartan Park

St. Vartan Park is a 2.76-acre park in the Murray Hill neighborhood, bounded by First and Second Avenues and East 35th and 36th Streets. The park is named for St. Vartan Mamigonian, a 5th-century Armenian military leader and saint who is revered as a defender of the Armenian Christian faith.

The park's naming reflects the historical Armenian-American community in this part of Manhattan. The Armenian Apostolic Church has maintained a presence in the Murray Hill area for over a century, and the St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral on Second Avenue, one of the most architecturally distinctive churches in Manhattan, sits adjacent to the park.

The park features a large playground, basketball and handball courts, and open green spaces. Its relatively generous size for a Midtown East park makes it an important recreation resource for the surrounding residential neighborhood, which includes a mix of apartment buildings, medical facilities, and commercial offices.

Murray Hill occupies a transitional zone between the corporate towers of Midtown and the residential character of Gramercy and Kips Bay to the south. The park provides essential outdoor space in an area where much of the land is devoted to commercial and institutional uses.
