Washington Market Park

Washington Market Park is a 2.15-acre neighborhood park in Tribeca bounded by Chambers, Greenwich, and West Streets. The park is named for the Washington Market, the massive wholesale produce market that occupied nearby blocks from the early 19th century until the 1960s, when it was relocated to the Hunts Point Market in the Bronx.

The Washington Market was one of the great food distribution centers of the eastern United States, handling millions of pounds of fruits, vegetables, butter, eggs, and cheese daily. The market's demolition in the 1960s was one of the catalysts for Tribeca's transformation, clearing the way for the residential conversion of surrounding warehouse buildings.

The park features a playground, a gazebo, a large lawn, ornamental gardens, and tennis courts. Its community garden, maintained by neighborhood volunteers, provides growing space for flowers and vegetables. The park's design creates an enclosed, intimate green space that feels sheltered from the busy surrounding streets.

Washington Market Park has become the de facto town square for Tribeca families, hosting community events, seasonal celebrations, and everyday play throughout the year. The park's playground is one of the most popular in Lower Manhattan, drawing children from across the neighborhood.
