Pier 26

Pier 26 is a science-focused public pier in Hudson River Park at Hubert Street in Tribeca, designed to educate visitors about the ecology of the Hudson River estuary while providing recreation and relaxation space on the waterfront. The pier opened its current form in 2020 after a comprehensive rebuild.

The pier's centerpiece is a tide deck, a section of the pier that allows the river to flow beneath visitors' feet, creating a direct visual and sensory connection to the tidal rhythms of the Hudson. Interpretive displays explain the estuary's ecology, the species that inhabit it, and the environmental history of the river.

A native habitat garden on the pier features plants and grasses that once grew along the Hudson's shores before urbanization. The garden serves both as an ecological demonstration and as a beautiful landscape element, softening the hard edges of the pier with naturalistic plantings that attract butterflies and birds.

Pier 26 also includes an open lawn, a gathering area for community events, and connections to the Hudson River Park esplanade. The City Vineyard restaurant occupies a portion of the pier, providing waterfront dining that generates revenue to support park maintenance.

The pier represents a new generation of waterfront park design that emphasizes environmental education and ecological restoration alongside traditional recreation. By making the river itself the park's primary attraction, Pier 26 reconnects New Yorkers with the natural systems that sustain their city.
