Pier 57 Rooftop Park

Pier 57 Rooftop Park is a public park atop the renovated Pier 57 in Hudson River Park at West 15th Street in Chelsea. The rooftop park, which opened in 2023, provides an elevated waterfront experience with panoramic views of the Hudson River, the Meatpacking District, and the downtown Manhattan skyline.

Pier 57 was originally built in 1952-1954 as a marine terminal for the Grace Line shipping company, and later served as a bus depot for the city's transit authority. The massive concrete caisson structure was one of the last great pier buildings constructed on Manhattan's west side before containerization rendered traditional piers obsolete.

The renovation of Pier 57, led by RXR Realty and Youngwoo & Associates, preserved the historic structure while creating a mixed-use facility that includes Google's New York headquarters, a food hall (City Winery), and the public rooftop park. The adaptive reuse represents one of the most significant waterfront preservation projects in recent years.

The rooftop park features lawns, plantings, walking paths, seating areas, and unobstructed views in every direction. Its elevated position above the river provides a unique perspective on the Hudson River Park esplanade below and the Chelsea neighborhood stretching inland.

Pier 57 Rooftop Park adds a new dimension to Hudson River Park by providing a public space that floats above the waterline, offering views and a sense of openness that are distinct from the ground-level esplanade. It extends the tradition of transforming Manhattan's derelict maritime infrastructure into public amenities.
