Pier 40 is the largest pier in Hudson River Park, a 15-acre platform over the Hudson River that houses athletic fields, a parking garage, and recreational facilities serving the Greenwich Village and West Village neighborhoods.
The pier, originally a shipping terminal for the Holland America Line, is one of the last surviving grand piers from the era when Manhattan's West Side was lined with ocean liner terminals. Passengers bound for Europe departed from piers like this one.
Pier 40 is the subject of ongoing debate about its future: the pier's infrastructure is deteriorating, and proposals for its renovation range from maintaining its recreational function to developing mixed-use projects that could fund repairs.
The pier's athletic fields are among the most popular outdoor sports facilities in lower Manhattan, hosting youth soccer, adult softball, and recreational leagues that serve communities from Greenwich Village to Tribeca.
