Ruppert Park

Ruppert Park is a one-acre neighborhood park on Second Avenue between East 90th and 91st Streets on the Upper East Side. The park is named for Jacob Ruppert Jr., the beer magnate and owner of the New York Yankees during the team's dominant era of the 1920s and 1930s, who lived in the Yorkville neighborhood.

Ruppert inherited his father's brewery and built it into one of the largest in the country. His purchase of the Yankees in 1915 and subsequent acquisition of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1920 launched the most successful dynasty in baseball history. Ruppert built Yankee Stadium, which opened in 1923 and was known as 'The House That Ruth Built.'

The park sits in the Yorkville section of the Upper East Side, a neighborhood that was historically a center of German-American culture. Ruppert's brewery was nearby, and the neighborhood was once home to dozens of German beer halls, restaurants, and social clubs that gave Yorkville its distinctive character.

Ruppert Park features a playground, benches, and landscaped areas that serve the surrounding residential community. The park is part of a cluster of public spaces in the Yorkville area that includes Carl Schurz Park and Asphalt Green, providing recreation options for one of the Upper East Side's most family-oriented neighborhoods.

The park connects the modern Upper East Side to its Yorkville roots, honoring a man who was simultaneously one of the city's most successful industrialists, one of baseball's most transformative owners, and a product of the German-American community that shaped this corner of Manhattan.
