Teardrop Park

Teardrop Park is a 1.9-acre park in Battery Park City, tucked between residential towers on Warren Street between River Terrace and North End Avenue. Designed by landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, the park is widely considered one of the finest small parks built in New York City in the 21st century.

The park's design draws inspiration from the landscapes of the Hudson River Valley, incorporating a dramatic rock wall made of bluestone quarried from the Catskill Mountains, naturalistic plantings, rolling lawns, and a series of water features that range from a gentle seep to a cascading waterfall triggered by visitor interaction.

Teardrop Park was designed with children specifically in mind, incorporating play elements that are integrated into the natural landscape rather than segregated in a fenced playground. The ice wall (a winter feature where water flowing over the rock face freezes into spectacular formations), the slide hill, and the sand play area all encourage children to engage with nature rather than manufactured equipment.

The park is enclosed on two sides by the towers of Battery Park City, creating a sheltered microclimate that allows more delicate plantings to survive than would be possible on an exposed site. This enclosure also gives the park an intimate, garden-like quality that contrasts with the openness of the nearby waterfront esplanade.

Teardrop Park demonstrates that even in the most urban environments, landscape design can create experiences of genuine natural beauty. The park's Hudson Valley-inspired landscape brings the wildness of upstate New York to the heart of Lower Manhattan, offering residents a daily connection to the geological and botanical heritage of the region.
