New Dorp Beach

New Dorp Beach is an eight-acre public beach along Lower New York Bay on the eastern shore of Staten Island. The beach provides ocean access in a neighborhood that takes its name from the Dutch words for 'new village,' reflecting Staten Island's colonial origins.

New Dorp was one of the original Dutch settlements on Staten Island, established in the 17th century. The neighborhood's name, like many on the island, preserves the Dutch colonial heritage that predates English rule and the formation of New York City.

The beach and surrounding area were severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The recovery process has included beach restoration, boardwalk reconstruction, and community resilience planning that aims to protect the shoreline from future storm damage.

The beach connects to the FDR Boardwalk promenade and the adjacent Miller Field, creating a continuous waterfront recreation zone along the eastern shore. The beach provides seasonal swimming, sunbathing, and fishing opportunities for the local community.

New Dorp Beach serves a residential community whose relationship to the ocean is both its greatest amenity and its greatest vulnerability, providing the pleasures of waterfront living while demanding respect for the power of the sea.
