John Mullaly Park

John Mullaly Park is a 12.42-acre park at Jerome Avenue and East 164th Street in the Concourse Village section of the South Bronx, directly adjacent to Yankee Stadium. Named for John Mullaly, a 19th-century newspaper editor and parks advocate who campaigned for the creation of green spaces in the Bronx, the park was rebuilt as part of the new Yankee Stadium development.

Mullaly was a tireless advocate for public parks in what was then the rapidly urbanizing Bronx, arguing through his newspaper that the growing borough needed large reserves of green space to ensure the health and wellbeing of its residents. His advocacy helped establish many of the parks that serve the Bronx today.

The park was reconstructed in 2009 as part of the deal that allowed the Yankees to build their new stadium, which replaced the original Yankee Stadium across the street. The rebuilt park features synthetic turf athletic fields, basketball courts, a running track, playgrounds, and a water feature.

The park's proximity to Yankee Stadium places it at the heart of the South Bronx sports district, where game-day crowds fill the surrounding streets and the park serves as overflow gathering space. Between games, the park serves the everyday recreation needs of the Concourse Village community.

John Mullaly Park honors a man who understood that parks are not luxuries but necessities, especially in the city's most densely populated neighborhoods. The park's modern facilities, built as compensation for the loss of the original Yankee Stadium's parkland, serve a community that depends on public recreation space.
