Williamsbridge Oval

Williamsbridge Oval is an 19.75-acre park in the Norwood/Williamsbridge section of the northwestern Bronx, built on the site of the former Williamsbridge Reservoir, an oval-shaped water supply facility that was decommissioned and converted to parkland in the 1930s.

The park's distinctive oval shape preserves the footprint of the original reservoir, creating a unique park geometry that distinguishes it from the rectangular blocks of the surrounding neighborhood. The oval layout provides a natural running and walking loop that is popular with joggers and walkers.

The park features a swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, a running track following the oval's perimeter, playgrounds, and a recreation center. The pool is one of the most popular free summer swimming facilities in the northwestern Bronx.

Williamsbridge and Norwood are diverse residential neighborhoods with large Albanian, Dominican, and West African populations. The park serves as the primary recreation space for these communities, providing athletic facilities and green space in an area where the demand for public recreation consistently exceeds supply.

Williamsbridge Oval's transformation from water infrastructure to community park represents one of the more creative adaptive reuse projects in the city's park history. The reservoir's oval shape, preserved in the park's design, gives the neighborhood a distinctive landmark and a recreation facility whose geometry cannot be found in any other park in the borough.
