The Cherry Esplanade at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one of the premier cherry blossom viewing destinations in the United States, with over 200 cherry trees representing 42 varieties that bloom in succession from late March through mid-May.
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's annual Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) is the largest celebration of Japanese culture in the northeastern United States, drawing over 35,000 visitors for a weekend of performances, food, art, and cherry blossom viewing.
The Garden's collection of cherry trees, known as the Cherry Walk and Cherry Esplanade, was planted beginning in 1921 when Japanese cherry trees were first introduced to the collection. The trees now create one of the most spectacular spring displays in any American botanical garden.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, founded in 1910, occupies 52 acres adjacent to Prospect Park. The Garden's other highlights include the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, the Cranford Rose Garden, and the Steinhardt Conservatory of tropical and desert plants.
The Cherry Esplanade transforms the Brooklyn Botanic Garden each spring into a cloud of pink and white blossoms, creating one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in New York City and drawing visitors from around the world to celebrate hanami in Brooklyn.
