Brooklyn Museum Grounds surround the Brooklyn Museum, the second-largest art museum in New York City and one of the most important cultural institutions in the borough.
The Brooklyn Museum's collection of over 1.5 million works spans 5,000 years of culture, with particularly strong holdings in Egyptian antiquities, American art, and contemporary art. The museum's feminist art collection is one of the most important in the world.
The museum building, designed by McKim, Mead and White in a Beaux-Arts style, was originally planned to be the largest museum in the world. Only one-sixth of the original design was built, but the completed sections are architecturally magnificent.
Eastern Parkway, the tree-lined boulevard in front of the museum, was the world's first parkway when it was completed in 1874. Designed by Olmsted and Vaux as a connection from Prospect Park to the neighborhoods of Crown Heights and Brownsville, it remains one of Brooklyn's grandest avenues.
Brooklyn Museum Grounds connect the museum to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the Eastern Parkway boulevard, creating a cultural campus that rivals any in the city.
