Canarsie Pier

Canarsie Pier extends into Jamaica Bay from the Canarsie neighborhood of southeastern Brooklyn, providing fishing, birding, and waterfront recreation with sweeping views across the bay to the Rockaway Peninsula and the Gateway National Recreation Area.

The pier is named for the Canarsie people, the Lenape band that inhabited this section of Brooklyn's shoreline for thousands of years before European contact. The Canarsie sold the western portion of Long Island (including Brooklyn) to the Dutch in the 1630s.

Jamaica Bay, visible in every direction from the pier, is one of the most important coastal ecosystems in the northeastern United States, supporting over 325 species of birds and providing essential habitat for migrating shorebirds.

Canarsie is a residential neighborhood in southeastern Brooklyn with a strong Caribbean-American community, particularly Haitian-American and Jamaican-American. The pier serves as a community gathering space and fishing destination.
