Columbus Park

Columbus Park is a neighborhood park on Union Street between Hicks and Columbia Streets in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. The park provides recreation space in the western portion of Carroll Gardens, closer to the waterfront and the Columbia Street corridor.

The park features a playground, basketball courts, and open areas for informal recreation. Its location near the Columbia Street Waterfront District connects it to one of the most rapidly changing areas of Carroll Gardens, where former industrial properties have been converted to residential and commercial uses.

Carroll Gardens and the adjacent Columbia Street Waterfront District have a long Italian-American heritage that is still visible in the neighborhood's restaurants, social clubs, and street life. Columbus Park's naming reflects this heritage, honoring the explorer who has traditionally been venerated in Italian-American communities.

The neighborhood's western blocks, closer to the park, have a slightly grittier character than the polished brownstone streets farther east. This gives Columbus Park a more working-class feel than Carroll Park, the other major green space in Carroll Gardens.

Columbus Park serves the daily recreation needs of a neighborhood in transition, where the old waterfront industrial character is giving way to residential development while the established community continues to maintain its traditions and gathering places.
