Commodore Barry Park Pool is a public swimming facility within Brooklyn's oldest park (established 1836), providing free summer swimming near the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Fort Greene neighborhood.
Commodore Barry Park is named for John Barry, an Irish-born naval officer considered the 'Father of the American Navy' for his role in establishing the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War.
The park's location adjacent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard connects it to the maritime heritage of the waterfront. The Navy Yard, which built warships from 1801 to 1966, is now a thriving industrial campus with over 10,000 workers.
