Domino Sugar Refinery Artifacts

Domino Sugar Refinery Artifacts are the preserved industrial remnants within Domino Park that memorialize the massive sugar refinery that operated on the Williamsburg waterfront from 1856 to 2004, at its peak processing more than half the sugar consumed in the United States.

The artifacts include massive iron syrup tanks, crane structures, screw conveyors, and other machinery that have been cleaned and installed as sculptural elements throughout the park, creating an industrial archaeology experience unique in New York City.

The Domino Sugar Refinery employed thousands of workers over its 148-year history, many from the surrounding immigrant communities of Williamsburg. The working conditions were notoriously harsh, with extreme heat, dangerous machinery, and low wages.

Artist Kara Walker created 'A Subtlety,' a 75-foot-long sugar-coated sphinx inside the refinery in 2014 before its demolition, confronting the connection between sugar production and slavery in one of the most powerful public art installations in New York history.

The Domino Sugar Refinery Artifacts preserve the physical evidence of an industry that shaped the Williamsburg waterfront for nearly 150 years, connecting park visitors to the labor, commerce, and exploitation that built the sugar trade.
