The Prospect Park Audubon Center is the first urban Audubon center in the United States, housed in the park's landmark Beaux-Arts Boathouse and providing environmental education, birdwatching programs, and nature walks in a park that supports over 200 bird species.
The center, operated by the Prospect Park Alliance in partnership with the National Audubon Society, offers free programs including guided bird walks, nature crafts for children, and electric boat tours of Prospect Park Lake.
Prospect Park's diverse habitats, including mature forest, meadows, a 60-acre lake, and shoreline areas, support an extraordinary diversity of bird species for an urban park. The park is a critical stopover for migrating songbirds.
The Boathouse building, designed by Helmle and Huberty and completed in 1905, is one of the finest park buildings in New York City. Its white terra cotta facade, arched windows, and lakeside setting create a building of extraordinary beauty.
The Prospect Park Audubon Center connects urban New Yorkers to the natural world through the birds that share their park, providing environmental education in a Beaux-Arts masterpiece on the shores of Brooklyn's only lake.
