Sebago Canoe Club is a historic paddling club on Paerdegat Basin in southeastern Brooklyn, providing kayaking, canoeing, and sailing access to Jamaica Bay, one of the most important coastal ecosystems in the New York metropolitan area.
Founded in 1933, Sebago is one of the oldest continuously operating canoe clubs in the United States. The club offers public programs including kayak rentals, paddling lessons, and guided tours of Jamaica Bay's marshes and islands.
Jamaica Bay's 26,000 acres of water, islands, and marshland support over 325 species of birds, making it one of the most important birding destinations in the northeastern United States. Paddlers from Sebago can access this ecosystem directly from the club.
The bay's salt marshes, while significantly reduced from their historic extent, continue to provide essential ecological services including storm surge protection, water filtration, and nursery habitat for commercially important fish species.
Sebago Canoe Club provides New Yorkers with direct water access to one of the most ecologically significant coastal environments on the Atlantic seaboard, from a launch point in the heart of Brooklyn.
