Van Voorhees Park

Van Voorhees Park, also known as Van Voorhees Playground, is a 5.74-acre park in the Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights area of Brooklyn, nestled between the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Atlantic Avenue. The park offers athletic facilities and play areas for the surrounding brownstone neighborhood.

The park is named for the Van Voorhees family, descendants of Steven Coerten Van Voorhees, who settled in Brooklyn in the mid-17th century and became a magistrate and elder of the Dutch Reformed Church in Flatlands. It more specifically honors a later family member, Tracy Voorhees, a Columbia-educated attorney and World War II veteran who went on to serve as Assistant Secretary of the Army.

The park features baseball and softball fields, tennis, handball, and basketball courts, play equipment, and exercise areas. Its ballfields support youth and adult athletic leagues serving the surrounding neighborhoods.

Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights are among Brooklyn's most historic residential neighborhoods, with brownstone-lined streets, tree-shaded blocks, and a strong tradition of preservation. The park provides a substantial green space tucked along the edge of the expressway, away from the busier commercial corridors.

Van Voorhees Park serves the daily recreation needs of a historic corner of Brooklyn, providing athletic facilities and green space within reach of the dense residential blocks of Cobble Hill, the Columbia Street waterfront, and Brooklyn Heights.
