Williamsburg Bridge Playground

Williamsburg Bridge Playground is a neighborhood playground on Havemeyer Street near the Williamsburg Bridge approach in south Williamsburg. The playground sits in the shadow of the bridge, one of the three great East River suspension bridges that connect Brooklyn to Manhattan.

The Williamsburg Bridge, completed in 1903, was the first major bridge to use steel towers instead of stone, and at the time of its opening it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge provided the critical transportation link that opened Williamsburg to massive immigration from the overcrowded Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The playground serves the diverse south Williamsburg community, which includes a large Satmar Hasidic Jewish population alongside Latino families and the younger residents who have been drawn to the neighborhood by its proximity to the Williamsburg Bridge and the L train subway.

The playground features modern play equipment, safety surfacing, and seating areas. Its location near the bridge approach means it experiences significant traffic noise, but the facility provides essential outdoor play space in a densely populated area with limited green space.
