Wingate Park

Wingate Park is a 6.21-acre park in East Flatbush, bounded by Winthrop Street, Rutland Road, and Brooklyn Avenue. Named for George Wingate, a Civil War veteran and marksman who co-founded the National Rifle Association and established the Public Schools Athletic League, the park provides significant recreation space for the East Flatbush community.

Wingate's advocacy for marksmanship training and physical fitness in the late 19th century helped establish the tradition of organized youth athletics in New York City public schools. The Public Schools Athletic League, which he founded in 1903, organized competitive sports for hundreds of thousands of students and remains active today.

The park features basketball courts, a playground, a running track, and open green areas. It also hosts the annual West Indian Day Festival activities and serves as a staging area for events connected to the West Indian American Day Carnival on nearby Eastern Parkway.

East Flatbush is home to one of the largest Caribbean-American communities in the United States, and the park reflects this cultural identity in its daily use and its role in neighborhood celebrations. Cricket, soccer, and basketball are all popular sports in the park.
