345 Park Avenue is a Privately Owned Public Space on Park Avenue at 51st Street, one of the signature corporate plazas on Manhattan's most prestigious business boulevard.
The building at 345 Park Avenue is a major corporate headquarters location on the block between 51st and 52nd Streets, in the heart of the Park Avenue office corridor. The plaza serves thousands of office workers from this building and the surrounding towers.
Park Avenue between 46th and 57th Streets contains the greatest concentration of corporate headquarters in the world. The Seagram Building at 375 Park Avenue, two blocks north, set the standard for corporate plaza design when Mies van der Rohe created its iconic forecourt in 1958.
The Seagram Building's plaza was not a POPS (it predates the program) but it inspired the incentive zoning that created hundreds of subsequent plazas along Park Avenue and throughout Midtown. The building demonstrated that setting a tower back from the street and providing public space could enhance both the building and the city.
This POPS continues the tradition of corporate plazas on Park Avenue that began with the Seagram Building, providing public outdoor space on the avenue that defines American corporate architecture.
