Imagination Playground

Imagination Playground is an innovative play space on John Street in the Financial District, designed by architect David Rockwell and opened in 2010. Unlike traditional playgrounds with fixed equipment, Imagination Playground is built around loose parts play: children create their own structures and games using oversized blue foam blocks, sand, and water.

The playground was conceived as a radically different approach to children's play, influenced by research showing that unstructured, open-ended play fosters creativity, problem-solving, and social skills more effectively than predetermined climbing structures and swings.

Rockwell's design features a sand area, water features, and bins filled with the signature blue foam blocks of various shapes and sizes that children can stack, arrange, and reconfigure freely. Play associates (trained staff) are on hand to facilitate play without directing it, encouraging children to follow their own creative impulses.

The playground's location in the Financial District reflects the neighborhood's transformation into a residential community. Before the residential boom of the early 2000s, the area had virtually no family-oriented amenities. Imagination Playground was one of several new facilities that helped make Lower Manhattan viable for families with children.

The Imagination Playground concept has been replicated in cities around the world through a portable version called Imagination Playground in a Cart, which brings the loose-parts play experience to schools, community centers, and temporary events. The original Financial District location remains the flagship, demonstrating that playground design can be as inventive as any other form of architecture.
