Dry Dock Playground

Dry Dock Playground is a 1.5-acre playground in the East Village, located at Szold Place and East 10th Street near the FDR Drive. The playground takes its name from the dry docks that once lined the East River waterfront in this area, where ships were hauled out of the water for repair and maintenance.

The neighborhood around the playground was once one of New York's most important shipbuilding and ship repair centers. The dry docks operated from the early 19th century through the early 20th century, employing thousands of workers and helping establish New York as the nation's preeminent port city.

Today the playground serves the surrounding Stuyvesant Town and East Village communities with basketball courts, play equipment for children, handball courts, and open recreation areas. The playground's relatively generous size for this part of Manhattan makes it a significant recreation resource.

Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village, the massive residential complex adjacent to the playground, houses approximately 25,000 residents in 110 buildings. The playground provides essential outdoor recreation space for the families living in these apartments, supplementing the private open spaces within the residential complex.

Dry Dock Playground connects its users to a chapter of Manhattan's maritime and industrial past that has been almost entirely erased from the physical landscape. Where ships once rested in timber-framed basins, children now play on colorful climbing structures, a transformation that captures the complete reinvention of the East River waterfront.
