Murphy Brothers Playground

Murphy Brothers Playground is a 1.28-acre playground at Avenue C and East 17th Street, near the eastern edge of Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village. The playground is named for local brothers who served in the military, following the city's tradition of honoring servicemembers through the naming of neighborhood parks.

The playground sits at the boundary between the massive Stuyvesant Town residential complex and the older East Village/Lower East Side neighborhood to the south. This location means it serves a diverse mix of users: families from the 11,250-unit Stuyvesant Town alongside residents of the surrounding walk-up apartment buildings.

Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village, built by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company between 1943 and 1947, was one of the largest private housing developments in American history. Its construction displaced thousands of residents and businesses from the former Gas House District. The playground, situated just outside the complex's boundaries, provides a public recreation space accessible to all.

Facilities include play equipment for children, basketball courts, handball courts, and open areas for informal recreation. The playground's proximity to the FDR Drive and the East River esplanade allows families to combine a playground visit with a walk along the waterfront.

Murphy Brothers Playground serves as a connecting point between two very different residential environments: the planned uniformity of Stuyvesant Town's red-brick towers and the older, more varied streetscape of the East Village. The playground's public character ensures that children from both communities share a common play space.
