Jamaica Bay Greenway

Jamaica Bay Greenway is a developing network of waterfront paths, trails, and parks circling Jamaica Bay, one of the most important coastal ecosystems in the northeastern United States.

The completed sections of the greenway provide cycling and walking access along the bay's northern shore through Howard Beach, Spring Creek, and Canarsie, with views across the water to the Rockaway Peninsula and the Wildlife Refuge islands.

Jamaica Bay encompasses 26,000 acres of open water, islands, and marshland that support over 330 species of birds, making it one of the most important birding destinations on the Atlantic Flyway. The greenway provides non-motorized access to this ecosystem.

The bay's ecology faces significant challenges including marsh loss (over 60% of the bay's salt marshes have disappeared since the 1950s), water quality degradation, and the impacts of climate change and sea level rise.

Jamaica Bay Greenway will eventually provide continuous waterfront access around one of the most ecologically significant water bodies in the New York metropolitan area, connecting communities in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Rockaway Peninsula through shared access to the bay.
