Willow Lake Preserve

Willow Lake Preserve is a nature sanctuary within Flushing Meadows Corona Park, protecting a freshwater lake and surrounding wetlands that provide habitat for over 100 species of birds in the heart of Queens.

The preserve occupies the quieter, less-developed southern section of Flushing Meadows Corona Park, away from the Unisphere and the park's major recreational facilities. The contrast between the manicured northern park and the wild southern preserve is striking.

Willow Lake was created around 1939 by damming the Flushing River for the World's Fair, and it has since reverted to a wild state as one of the last freshwater wetlands in Queens. The lake and its bordering wetlands support populations of wood ducks, green herons, painted turtles, and migrating songbirds.

The preserve demonstrates that even within heavily developed urban parks, pockets of genuine wilderness can be preserved when the ecological value of natural areas is recognized and protected.
