Rainey Park

Rainey Park is an eight-acre waterfront park along the East River at Vernon Boulevard and 34th Avenue, straddling the Astoria and Long Island City neighborhoods. Named for Dr. Thomas Rainey, the 19th-century Ravenswood resident who spent decades and much of his fortune campaigning for a bridge across the East River (the effort that eventually produced the Queensboro Bridge), the park provides waterfront access and athletic facilities.

The park's East River frontage offers views of Roosevelt Island, the Queensboro Bridge, and the Manhattan skyline. The waterfront promenade connects to the growing network of public spaces along the Long Island City and Astoria shoreline, creating a continuous waterfront walking and cycling route.

Rainey Park features a large athletic field, basketball courts, a running track, a playground, and a dog run. The athletic field is home to youth and adult soccer, football, and cricket leagues that reflect the diverse athletic traditions of western Queens' multinational population.

The park's western Queens location places it within one of the most rapidly developing corridors in the city, where residential towers in Long Island City give way to the lower-rise residential fabric of Astoria. The park serves both communities as a shared waterfront amenity.

Rainey Park provides the kind of waterfront recreation that western Queens residents have increasingly demanded as the area's industrial waterfront is transformed into residential and public space. The park's combination of athletics, waterfront access, and skyline views makes it one of the most valued parks in the area.
