Rockaway Freeway Park

Rockaway Freeway Park is a community park in Far Rockaway serving one of the most geographically isolated and resilient communities in Queens, on the barrier island peninsula that separates Jamaica Bay from the Atlantic Ocean.

Far Rockaway, at the eastern tip of the Rockaway Peninsula, is 90 minutes from Midtown Manhattan by public transit, making it one of the most remote communities in the five boroughs. This isolation has shaped the neighborhood's self-reliant character.

The Rockaway Peninsula was devastated by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, with Far Rockaway experiencing some of the worst flooding and property damage. The community's recovery continues more than a decade later.

Far Rockaway's diverse community includes Orthodox Jewish, African American, Caribbean, and Latino families who share the peninsula's beaches, boardwalk, and neighborhood parks. The community's diversity is one of its defining strengths.
